Doula metaphors

Every now and then I get an email from someone who says they were thinking about the book they’ve always wanted to write, and suddenly they had this inspiration that what they needed was a “book doula,” and then they googled it, and– oh amazing happenstance– they find that such a thing actually exists, and it is me.These always make me smile.

“Everything you can imagine is real,” as Picasso said.

Doula metaphors follow me everywhere these days. I want to start tracking them. The other night this popped out from Dr. Clarissa Pinkola Estes’ book, Untie the Strong Woman:

“Gestation by ego’s measure is most often too long. But by soul’s measure, the length of the waiting and making within, before what is being created shows on the outside, is ever just right.”
